Kenneth Branagh is directing Thor

What is with all of these offbeat directing choices for big-budget movies that actually make a lot of sense?  Can we at least give Ratner The Avengers so this can even out?

Who better to make a really epic Thor movie than the maker of a four hour Hamlet/owner of a big metal spider?  He is definitely capable of injecting some gravitas into a project that really needs it to work.  If Christpher Nolan created the Godfather of comic book movies maybe Branagh can give us the Ten Commandments.  More people would have called for Branagh following Matthew Vaughn’s (inevitable) departure if it ever crossed anybody’s mind that he would actually do it.  Showing up in Wild Wild West or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to pay the bills is not the same as making the commitment to direct a blockbuster.  Branagh is talented and respected enough to get mainstream offers, up until recently he seemed content to make made-for-HBO Shakespearean adaptations where his vision is unquestioned instead.

Everything about this choice sounds great, as long as he’s learned a little bit about directing action scenes since 1996.
